A king is not an alien ruler in the Ukrainian history. The adoption of a kingly rule is associated in our historical tradition mostly with Daniel of Galicia who became a king in the mid-13th century. However, our ancestors lived under the rule of kings from the mid-14th century until the end of the 18th century. These monarchs were mostly Polish, a few were Hungarian, but they were the sovereigns of our ancestors at the time when the countries that included areas of Ukraine were not nation-states. This book is about the kings and dynasties from the 1340s to the 1790s, of which our ancestors were subjects. The first part talks about the kings of the
Piast, Anjou, and Jagiellon dynasties. The second part outlines the stories of elected kings who were chosen by nobles at electoral Sejms in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Eighteen essays present biographies of monarchs and the history of dynasties in the context of the Ukrainian history.
